Chinese Chery for Jamaican market
published: Sunday | May 21, 2006

JAMAICANS MAY soon be seeing more and more of the Chery brand on the roads as, recently, New Line Motors secured this dealership on the local market.

In 2005, Chery produced over 100,000 vehicles and sales have been climbing. The company has been aggressive in procuring Western and Japanese technologies to enhance the range and the quality of its vehicles.

China exported 47,400 vehicles (including chassis) last year with a 108.56 per cent rise year on year. Exports were valued at US$372 million, a 49.45 per cent rise year on year. At the Shanghai Auto Car show, the Chery M14 coup cabriolet hardtop convertible won 'Best New Car in show' for 2005.

The first cars to be offered from this company locally will be the Chery QQ, a small five seater passenger economy car and the Chery Eastar, the flagship five-seater sedan.

The QQ is compact and zippy. It is said to be economical yet lively. 800cc and 1100cc engines offer unexpected pep from a good power to weight ratio. Equipped with a ISAY stereo system, the QQ talks. Bold colours will attract the eye.

THE EASTAR

The Eastar is a mixture of luxury and performance. It features an overhead camshaft, 4 cylinders and 16 valve engine which churns out maximum power of 95/5500 and maximum torque of 198/3000.

Equipped with Delphi ABS system, four key safety systems SRS airbags, a visual reverse radar plus low brake fluid alarm, safety is emphasised.

Overall, five of the company's seven models will be sold in Jamaica. The Tiggo, the B14 and the A21 are next. The B14 is a seven-seater passenger minivan and the A21 is a five-seat sedan motor car.
