BOMBAY, India (AP):
INDIA'S CAPTAIN Rahul Dravid and coach Greg Chappell exuded confidence hours before the team's departure yesterday for a series of four Tests and five one-dayers against the West Indies.
India are looking to register their first series win over the West Indies since 1970-71.
"We have been doing well of late and we hope to beat the West Indies this time round," said Dravid. "The last time we played there in 2002, we came close to winning the series, having won the Test in Trinidad, but then allowed the opponents to come back."
Dravid said the Indian team was confident it would not repeat its mistakes.
"We will perform to the best of our abilities," Dravid told reporters in Bombay.
GOOD PERFORMERS
"Of late we have had some very good performances in one-dayers and we would be looking to carry ahead the same into the Test matches," he said. "The team has some very good youngsters and they all are eager and excited to deliver their best in the Caribbean."
Dravid also welcomed the seven-day break between the one-dayers and Test matches, saying it would help the team "stay focused and plan for the larger version of the game."
Chappell said the Indian team had to convert its one-day showings into Test performances. "It's about time that we did that," he said.
SOMETHING TO PROOVE
The West Indies outing was also about proving that the team could do just as well away from home, the Indian coach said.
"To me it is more about proving that we can win away from home," Chappell said.
