Ministers' fraternal seeks to soften Spanish Town's image
published: Wednesday | May 10, 2006

Rasbert Turner, Gleaner Writer

SPANISH TOWN, St. Catherine:

THE SPANISH Town Ministers' Fraternal, in a bid to soften the image of some of the inner-city communities in Spanish Town, has put forward plans to revitalise at least four.

Tawes Meadows, Elleslie Garden, Shelter Rock and Jones Avenue are to be adopted by the Fraternity, which will spearhead a development plan to revitalise these areas, while helping community members to acquire life skills in a number of areas.

"We are going to assist them with skills training including cosmetology, computer training, block-making and other income-generating projects. In addition we want to set up a homework centre. We want to implement projects which will get the residents to feel better about themselves," said Rowan Edwards, chairman of the fraternal.

He said that Food For The Poor has vouched to support the venture, which is scheduled to start very shortly, and that the fraternal will also be contacting the Jamaica Social Investment Fund and UNICEF to enlist their support and input. The aim, he said, is to broaden the programme as time goes by.

Member of Parliament Olivia 'Babsy' Grange said that the goodwill mission "is historic and meaningful, and will help to provide some of the resources needed to transform the communities".
