Read Across Jamaica Day a hit with students
published: Wednesday | May 10, 2006

THERE SURE won't be any monsters messing with four-year-old Nysa Bryan any time soon! The chirpy first-grade student at the Half-Way Tree Primary School in St. Andrew, was so caught up in the story her teacher read to her about how the princess defeated the monster, that by the time the tale was complete, she could repeat the story beginning to end.

ISLANDWIDE TREAT

Nysa was one of about 1,200 students at the school and thousands islandwide, who were treated to a full day of storytelling in observance of Read Across Jamaica Day, yesterday.

At Nysa's school, parents as well as big wigs from corporate Jamaica turned out to read to the students, who by the looks of it, enjoyed every minute of it.

Vice-principal Gloria Lee said the day was a success. "It really was good. We emphasised the importance of reading and explained to the children just how important reading is," she said.

Meanwhile, Nysa couldn't stop talking about the story she heard earlier. "It was really, really good. I really enjoyed it. I like reading, even on my own, so it's always nice to hear a good story," the girl explained with a clever smile.
