Jamaica Teachers' Association (JTA) president spearheads day of reading
published: Wednesday | May 10, 2006

PRESIDENT OF the Jamaica Teachers' Association (JTA) Ruel Reid yesterday spearheaded the national Read Across Jamaica Day, illustrating to students at the Dunoon Technical High School the importance of reading towards social and economic independence.

"Everything you need to know about life is in a book; there is an open universe of opportunities," he told students. He added that the ability to read with understanding is the key towards capitalising on a wealth of knowledge available.

HIS CHOICE

He then treated a group of grade nine students to excerpts from a book of his choice, about Jamaican culture and its impact on the world.

The idea of a national day to promote reading and literacy came initially from the National Education Association in the United States of America in 1998. The event, Mr. Reid said, was an important step in encouraging children to make reading a regular part of their lives.
