YOU'VE HEARD the latest buzz - 60 is the new 40. Fresh, sexy, career-
oriented and as confident as only an older woman can be; for women, life now begins, not at age 40, but at 60. Life is just beginning, for example,
for prominent 60-year-old women like Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller, Olivia 'Babsy' Grange, Thalia Lyn, to name a few.
So how can you live well, live longer, age gracefully and continue to look fabulous every day? It's not in a pill, it's a way of life, which The Gleaner's
health experts have been packaging for you every week. So take their tips, revamp your life and look fabulous at your 60 and over birthday bash.
Try the balancing act - eat balanced meals, taking foods from the various food groups. Eat well, but don't overdo it; control your portions. Eat to boost your immune system by focusing on ACE, that is, vitamins A, C, E, some selenium and zinc. Eating breakfast is a healthy habit that you can implement today. Our nutritionist, Rosalee Brown, recommends a healthy breakfast shake for busy people on the run:
HEALTHY SHAKE
6 tablespoons oatmeal
1 cup frozen papaya
or fruits of choice
12 peanuts
1 teaspoon flax seeds
1 cup low-fat soy
To make, blend to desired
consistency with additional ice cubes.
Keep stress on the level
Worrying will add wrinkles to your skin and years to your life. You can't get rid of stress, but learn to control it. Dr. Carmen Bowen-Wright, wellness practitioner, offers some tips:
1. Don't keep a stressor to yourself. Find a trusted confidant.
2. Set aside time daily or weekly to do something
pleasant and uplifting.
3. Use music as a destressor.
4. Set aside a few minutes each day to visualise
pleasant scenes or situations for relaxation.
Daily beauty care routine
Looking good will make you feel good. Develop a beauty care routine. Do your own facials at home (steam, scrub, mask, moisturise with SPF 15). Pay attention to details - nails, eyebrows and hair. Dab on just a little make-up for extra glow. Wear clothes that make you feel beautiful.
Give and accept love freely
Maintain integrity in all aspects of self - mind, body and
spirit. How you feel, think and behave must merge for inner peace. Radiate love; love yourself and others. Find peace and love within. Dr. Wendel Abel, consultant psychiatrist, says that you "should accept yourself for who you are. Don't try to be another person. We all have to make a conscious effort to be happy. Don't rely on other persons to make you happy.
Identify the things you enjoy doing and pursue them, provided they are not destructive. Identify the people who have positive influences on you and who you enjoy being around and foster these relationships. Take nothing for granted in this life and
find your centre. Make sure this centre is within".
