German ship for Jamaica
published: Tuesday | May 9, 2006

Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller is given a warm greeting by Roger Hinds, vice-president of the Shipping Association of Jamaica (SAJ), as she visits the SAJ booth at the recent JMA/JEA Expo. Hinds used the opportunity to update the Prime Minister on the SAJ's efforts to protect exports through its Canine Division that helps to detect illegal drugs. - CONTRIBUTED

THE JAMAICA Ship Registry (JSR) has registered its first German-owned ship.

Operated by Harren and Partners, the 127-metre vessel M/V CFS Pafilia was christened in Germany on May 5 by Rosalie Donaldson, board member of the Maritime Authority of Jamaica and senior vice-president of marketing at the Port Authority of Jamaica.

"This brand new ship will be a good addition to the Jamaican flag," says Andreas Schorlemmer, managing director of Pérez y Cía, the local agent for Harren and Partners. Schorlemmer was on hand to witness the naming and christening of the vessel in Emden, Germany.

"Harren and Partners is happy to forge this alliance with the Jamaica Ship Registry. We have a special relationship with Jamaica and we are always looking for opportunities to support developments in the country. Therefore, when we were approached about registering a vessel with the JSR, we thought nothing would be better than a new building," said Schorlemmer.

Rear Admiral Peter Brady, director general of the Maritime Authority of Jamaica, who was also in Germany for the occasion, expressed his delight in the first new building of this size for the JSR and the first fruits of the organisation's marketing programme in Germany.

"We are quite pleased at the Maritime Authority that Harren and Partners has placed its confidence in the Jamaica Ship Registry to oversee the flag state needs of its newest vessel. Our motto - 'A Commitment to Quality' - drives all we do, so the company can be assured that its vessel is in the right hands."

Built by Cassens Werft Shipyard in Germany, the M/V CFS Pafilia is a multi-purpose container vessel with a 712 20-foot-equivalent-unit container capacity. The vessel is also fitted with an unmanned machinery space which puts it in the company of vessels boasting innovative ship technology.

The official registration of the vessel was carried out by Deputy Registrar Alfred Kramer, the JSR's representative in Germany.
