Portia to speak on Budget today
published: Tuesday | May 9, 2006

PRIME MINISTER Portia Simpson Miller will today make her inaugural presentation to the Budget Debate in Gordon House where she is expected to respond to several burning issues raised by Opposition Leader Bruce Golding last Thursday during his contribution.

It is also believed that themes expressed during her historic inauguration ceremony at King's House on March 30 will be revisited.

After being sworn in, the Prime Minister had pledged to advance human rights and individual liberty.

She declared that the state has a responsibility to protect the society. "We cannot build the harmony and peace that this society so desperately needs unless all Jamaicans know that they will be treated with dignity and with respect," said Mrs. Simpson Miller.

When he made his presentation to the Budget Debate last Thursday, Mr. Golding struck a note, which resonated with the Prime Minister's remarks.

Golding argued that for more than 10 years, the legislature has been working to design a Charter of Rights that will act as a "shield and weapon" against abuse.
