Gregg ... the driver to beat at Vernamfield airstrip today. - File
THE THIRD round of the Jamaica Millennium Motoring Club (JMMC) Sprint Championship takes place today at the old Vernamfield airstrip in Clarendon.
Round two, which was staged in Montego Bay, St. James, last month, was won by former champion driver Jeffery Panton in a Mitsubishi Evolution 9, but with the return of Gary Gregg and his Ford Focus, it will be interesting to see which of the cars have been prepared to challenge Gregg in the JA8 Class.
"We are coming to give of our best. Right now we are not concerned about anybody, we are just focussing on Gary (Gregg)," said Panton, who believes that his vehicle is among the top five fastest cars in the country.
Gregg, on the other hand, will be competing for the first time this year. Panton is hoping to capitalise on any mistakes made by Gregg.
"Anybody can make mistakes, but we will be trying our best," said Panton.
Most of the participants will not be known until today when the drivers submit their entry forms. President of the JMMC, Errol Anderson, is expecting a great day and some exciting finishes, especially in the JA2 and JA3 classes.
Some of the drivers expected to compete include Doug Gore, Teddy Burton and a number of the JMMC drivers.
Gore, who spoke with The Gleaner on Friday, said he is going all out to win this event which he is using as part of his preparation for an international meet to be held in Japan later this year.
"I figure Gary (Gregg) might be using this event to prepare for the Barbados Rally next month, so I don't think he will want to take any big chances," said Gore.
Up to Friday afternoon, Burton was not 100 per cent sure his car would be ready for the event.
"Everything is left up to my mechanic. I am about 70 per cent sure that I will be there," said Burton, who is one of the top circuit racing drivers at the Dover Raceway in St. Ann.
