Jamrock Streetballers tour put off
published: Sunday | May 7, 2006

Kwesi Mugisa, Staff Reporter

THE MUCH-ANTICIPATED Jamrock Streetballers tour, expected to feature some of the popular United States' And1 tours' top players, has been postponed due to the withdrawal of a major sponsor last week.

The local fans of the widely watched ESPN programme will now have to wait indefinitely to see some of their favourite players, including Grayson 'The Professor' Boucher, John 'High Octane' Harvey, Dennis 'Spyda' Chism and Anthony 'Half Man Half Amazing' Heyward.

SPONSOR FELL THROUGH

Although the players were ready and booked for the tournament, the unnamed sponsor fell through and Legend Sports Management, promoters of the event, decided it would be best to postpone the event until it could receive full support.

"The interest that we have got with regards to it so far has been phenomenal and if that component on Monday was booked, then we definitely could have gone ahead with it," said director of the organisation, Patricia Gillings.

UNCERTAINTY

"You don't take a cake out of the oven before it is baked. This was our first event and it will have to be very strong to make it an annual one." she said.

There is, however, no certainty as to when the event will be back on as the National Indoor Sports Complex (NISC) has no available opening for the rest of May and June. It is hoped that the players, who go on tour during the summer, will be able to make an appearance in August.

Gillings also indicated that by that time more players may be added to the line-up as since the putting off of the event, Randy 'White Chocolate' Gill has expressed an interest in playing in the event.

A major problem which the event faced was a clash with the Caribbean Basketball Championships in terms of competing for sponsors.
