Delightful integration of text, colour visuals
published: Sunday | May 7, 2006

Knowing and Taking Care of my Body
Authors: Vilma McClenan, Bernetta Porter, Phyllis Reynolds, Hortense Morgan, Sharon Neil
Reviewer: Barbara Nelson
Publisher: Carlong Publishers

THIS COLOURFUL, attractive and lavishly illustrated book is the first of the five books intended for Year three in the totally integrated series, Carlong Primary Integrated Studies.

The series addresses in detail the requirements of the new Revised Primary Curriculum (RPC) for years one to three in Jamaican primary schools.

Each textbook integrates social studies, science and technology, religious education, art and craft, the visual and performing arts, physical education as well as aspects of information technology.

The mathematics and language arts 'windows' requirements are interwoven throughout. Assessment tasks are also interwoven throughout as well as at the end of each focus question.

The key features of the book are:

Comprehensive coverage of all focus questions, objectives and attainment targets of the Revised Primary Curriculum (RPC).

A student-centred and integrated approach to the concepts taught.

Assessment tasks interwoven throughout as well as at the end of each focus question.

'What have you learnt?' and 'Window on Words' summarise the concepts and key words learnt.

Parents and guardians are involved in their child's learning process in the 'teacher/parent help' pages.

An integral part of the learning process is the attractive and stimulating visuals that are on every page of the book.

THREE UNITS

There are three units in this book. Unit 1: Some Important Body Parts with focus question: Why are teeth, stomach and lungs important parts of my body?

Unit 2 is Taking Care of my Body with focus question: Why and how should I take care of different parts of my body?

Unit three is Food for a Healthy Body with focus question: How does my food help in making my body healthy?

Each section also has a 'Window on Words' and 'What have you learnt?' and ends with focus question assessment.

There are attractive and stimulating visuals on every page of this book.

COLOURFUL VISUALS

I particularly liked the colourful visuals used in 'Why are lungs important?' on Page 51, (a teacher/parent help page); 'Riding with OG (Oxygen Gas) and CDG (Carbon Dioxide gas)' on pages 63-65; the 'Healthy Teeth' game on page 101; 'I am Stressed!' on pages 126 and 127 and 'Go, grow and glow' on page 139.

The visuals for 'Nutrients in Food' on pages 143, 144 and 145 and 'The Wedding Feast' on pages 170-171 are sure to capture the imagination of the students.
