THE ANNUAL Liguanea Arts Festival which promises to be bigger this year takes place on Sunday, May 21, at Liguanea Plaza in Matilda's Corner. The exciting event will feature an impressive list of Jamaica's leading artists and photographers showcasing their works of art. Many will be there in person to discuss their favourite pieces and latest techniques.
The festival is the brainchild of husband and wife team, June and Tony Wong of Liguanea Drug & Garden Centre, main sponsors of this event, along with major sponsorship from the Gleaner Company and other companies to be confirmed.
This is the third consecutive year that they will host this popular and well-organised festival, featuring the best that Jamaica has to offer in the visual arts. All artists and photographers must be present to meet the public, which is one of the requirements of all exhibitors. This year, additional parking is available in the adjoining premises behind the plaza for the convenience of patrons, and adequate security will be provided.
ARTISTS GETTING READY
Among the exhibits are pencil and ink drawings, acrylic and watercolour paintings, mixed media, ceramics, sculptures, pewter, colour and black-and-white photographs printed on paper, canvas, and other materials. All the artists are busy creating and producing to make this show the best yet. Many of the big names have already confirmed their presence as they look forward to their special day on show to Jamaica and the world.
Artists and photographers confirmed are Dalia Jones, David and Allison Sinclair, Gene Pearson, Howard Moo Young, Hugh Wright, Phillip Supersad, Jack Allen, Jean Taylor-Bushay, Kay Sullivan, Jeremy Francis, Franz Marzouca, Juliet Thorburn, Michael Layne, Nakazzi Hutchinson, Phillip and Marcia Henry, Robert 'Kibo' Thompson, Shakira Khan, Solomon Sinclair, Tony Wong, Viv Logan, Webster Campbell, Carol Watson, Lenox Coke, Ewan McAnuff, Paul Blackwood, Edward Channer, Devon Harvey, Betty Glanville, Patsy Muir, Sharon Fox-Mould and others.
For the comfort of patrons, additional food and refreshment areas will be set up to accommodate those planning to attend, alongside the restaurants already on the plaza. Music will be provided by live mento and steel bands, and art demonstrations will be given for the benefit of aspiring artists. Portrait artists will be doing live portraits and photographs will be available for willing models at affordable prices.
Art collectors and lovers of art won't pass up this opportunity to add to their collection. Unusual and one-of-a-kind originals, together with authentic and signed giclee prints, will be available. Every item on display will be on sale, and special orders can be arranged with each artist in the exhibition.
