Family, friends mourn death of cricket lover
published: Thursday | April 27, 2006

Suzette Smith, Gleaner Writer

RALPH MAITLAND, of Independence City, Portmore, St. Catherine, and Roses Valley, St. Elizabeth, was a dedicated husband and father. He was also a former employee of the Jamaica Information Service (JIS) and was highly regarded for his principled ways. He was well read and had a wealth of knowledge on current affairs issues.

"He is the best thing that ever happened to me. I said it before him, and I say it after him. He was full of principle, and I adopted some from him. He will be missed by everyone," his wife Olga commented.

Mr. Maitland was born on May 13, 1935, in Roses Valley. He grew up and went to school in Roses Valley, but later moved to Kingston.

His working years were spent at JIS in the capacity of information officer, and later as a projectionist.

He got married in 1998 to Olga Panton. He enjoyed reading the newspapers, listening to the news, and cricket was his favourite sport.

He passed away at home on Tuesday, April 11, and has left "a lot of people mourning," Mrs. Panton-Maitland said.

His wife Olga, children, sisters, brothers, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends survive him.

A thanksgiving service for Mr. Maitland was held at the Gregory Park Baptist Church on Saturday, April 22. Interment followed in the family plot, St. Elizabeth.
