THE EDITOR, Sir:IT'S AN absolute shame that the Carib Cement Company (CCCL) has distributed sub-quality cement to the Jamaican people. As most other monopolised businesses in Jamaica have done, the CCCL has subjected the Jamaican public to poor service.
However, this situation is far more serious than any other situation we've seen as many lives and properties have been compromised.
Cement is literally the ingredient that holds the society together and its failure could result in serious casualties if buildings started failing.
I wish to see the CCCL severely reprimanded and forced to implement improved government-set-and-tested quality standards.
This also raises another issue: the failure of the Bureau of Standards in preventing this catastrophe. I have not heard any statements from the bureau, which is responsible for ensuring the good quality of all products marketed to the public.
A statement and/or apology is due to the country from the Bureau of Standards. Both entities should also be forced to disclose the effects the bad cement will have on buildings in which it has been used.
Jamaica has been held hostage to disservice from big-name capitalists who don't hold our interests at heart, for too long.
I am, etc.,
