DOUG 'HOLLYWOOD' Gore and his long-time co-driver, Mark 'Nello' Nelson, took the top honours at last Sunday's Lloyd's of Montego Bay/Mountain Dew Tarmac Stages Rally.

The event, which started and concluded in Montego Bay, St. James, attracted some of the best of the crop of local drivers from the Jamaica Millennium Motoring Club and the Montego Bay Motoring Club.

Gore, who also won the JA8 Class, said he wrapped up the event during the post-lunch period by extending over Jeffrey Panton, who was racing closely behind at one stage.

GOOD LEAD

"After a while there was no reason to pressure the car, because we had a good lead," Gore told Automotive.

Despite the absence of Gary Gregg's World Rally Ford Focus car, Gore spent a lot time preparing his Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 8 racing machine, to defend the only title that he won last year.

UPGRADED CAR

"We upgraded the car, the engine was much faster and we had installed a new braking system. I guess the vehicle was just working in my favour," Gore said with a chuckle.

He has been invited to Japan to compete in one of the big events later this year and, therefore, hopes to stamp his authority in the 2006 JMMC Rally Championship, before departing overseas.

President of the JMMC, Errol Anderson, said although there were only 15 starters, the events were exciting.

"The times were very close," said Anderson.

He explained that prior to the start, there were some problems, but these eventually were sorted out. The drivers were disciplined in their driving, he said.

Finishing second and third, respectively, behind Gore/Nelson were Leslie Madden Jnr. /Robert Duhaney in a Subaru Impreza WRX Sti, and Jeffrey Panton/Justin Morin, driving a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 9.

FIRST STAGE CANCELLED

The event started at the Valucel Mobile Communications store, at the Blue Diamond Shopping Centre in the upscale Ironshore neighbourhood at 8.30 a.m.

The competitors were supposed to have run over 10 special stages with a lunch stop at Yow travel halt in Rio Bueno before returning to end the day at Blue Diamond, but due to unforeseen circumstances, the first stage of the day was cancelled, and the competitors then took to the highway for the transit to SS2, the famous high-speed Daniel Town to Long Pond stage.

The pair of Dave Lee/Courtney Murphy rolled their Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 6 on SS3 while in the lead of the JN8 class. Noel Golding and Andre Gordon's Suzuki Cultus retired with mechanical problems.
