published: Friday | March 17, 2006

SONITA SUTHERLAND

THE ISLAND'S top junior athletes begin their quest today for places on Jamaica's Carifta Games team for the 2006 event in Guadeloupe from April 14-16.

The two-day trials are set for the National Stadium East complex starting at noon today, and 11:00 a.m. tomorrow.

All athletes registering to compete must be holders of a valid Jamaican passport to facilitate travel to the Carifta Games, if selected.

In addition, all athletes are required to produce proof of age before they are allowed to participate at the trials.

FINAL WARM-UP

The trials will also serve as the final warm-up before the annual VMBS/ISSA Boys' & Girls' Athletics Championships set for the National Stadium between March 29 - April 1.

World Junior 400m bronze medallist Sonita Sutherland; World Junior 400m hurdles bronze medallist Sherene Pinnock; Remaldo Rose, bronze medallist from the Italy World Junior Championships; World Youth and Pan American 100m hurdles silver medallist Natasha Ruddock, along with Schillonie Calvert, who won the 100m silver at the Monaco World Youth champs last year, are the big names down to compete.

KC's Cawayne Jervis and Alain Bailey, Anastasia Le-Roy and Bobbie-Gaye Wilkins of Holmwood, St. Jago's World Youth 200m bronze medallist Latoya King and reigning Carifta Games Under-17 double sprint champion, Yohan Blake of St. Jago, are also down to participate.
