ONE HUNDRED and eighty students from Mason Hall Primary and Mason Hall Basic schools will benefit from the newly-constructed bathroom facility donated by Beaches Boscobel Resort & Golf Club. Since the school opened in 1960 the students and staff body have been using pit latrines.
Rema Edwards, principal of Mason Hall Primary School, stated that this is a well-appreciated donation, as most of the students now have the opportunity to utilise piped water and flush toilets, as they do not have these basic necessities at home. Mason Hall residents are served by a community tank managed by the National Water Commission.
A student said, "I am happy to have the flush toilets as I will not have to face cockroach and other pests in the pit latrines anymore, or be afraid of going to the bathroom while I am at school ever again."
After six months and at a cost of $450,000, and the contribution of time and manpower from dedicated volunteers from the community, and sponsorship by Barnaby Engineering, Jamaica Public Service, and St. Mary Electrical & Motor Repairs, the students for the first time will enjoy the use of flush toilets at school.
The Parent-Teacher Association was instrumental in mobilising the community to ensure that the project was completed on a timely basis and within budget.
