THERE HAS been a decrease in the number of children killed on the nation's roadways for the first three months of the year, compared with the same period last year.

According to information provided by the National Road Safety Council (NRSC), six children were killed on the roads between January 1-March 15, 2006. In the same period last year, 11 children were killed.

The latest statistics were revealed during an NRSC meeting at the Courtleigh Hotel, New Kingston, yesterday.

Overall, the numbers were the same. A total of 63 persons, motorists and pedestrians, were killed on the roadways from January 1-March 15 both last year and this year. There were 59 fatal accidents during that period last year and 58 this year.

Road accidents cost Jamaicans an estimated $518 million annually in hospital costs alone.
