T&T: Ministry confirms gastro outbreak
published: Friday | March 17, 2006

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC):

THE HEALTH Ministry has confirmed a gastroenteritis outbreak here, resulting in the deaths of two children.

The ministry is investigating a report that 20 people from a single village have so far been diagnosed.

Dr Beni Balkaran, a paediatrician at the Mt. Hope Medical Sciences Complex, said it was not common for a child to die from gastro-enteritis in Trinidad.

"Before this case I cannot think of any child who has died from the virus. The last mortality from gastroenteritis was five years ago, when a child contracted the virus in Tobago," he said.
