GUYANA: Ex-soldiers arrested for missing weapons
published: Friday | March 17, 2006

GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC):

TWO EX-SOLDIERS were among six persons arrested here this week as the army intensifies a probe into weapons gone missing from its storage bond.

Following tips from the public, two former soldiers were among four persons taken into custody Tuesday following raids in Laing Avenue, in the capital, where 24 homes were searched.

The men are still in custody facing interrogation in connection with the disappearance of 33 AK-47 Russian-made assault rifles and five pistols from the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) bond at Camp Ayanganna, its city headquarters.

SIX ARMY RANKS ARRESTED

Six army ranks, tasked with securing the storage bond were among the first to be arrested after investigations commenced. They are still in army custody.

The widening probe took investigators more than 50 miles south of the capital Tuesday and Wednesday to Soesdyke and Timehri where members of the Guyana Police Force (GPF), searched four homes resulting in the arrest of two more persons.
