THERE WAS a strong detachment of police and military personnel yesterday at the Home Circuit Court, downtown Kingston, where the double murder trial of well-known Matthew's Lane resident 48-year-old Donald 'Zekes' Phipps is being held.

Phipps whose trial began yesterday is charged jointly with 33-year-old Garfield Williams, farmer, of St. Thomas for the murders of Rodney Leroy Farquharson and Dayton Williams, both of Bayshore Park, Eastern Kingston.

BURNT BODIES

The burnt bodies of the two men were discovered on April 15 last year in an open lot at Rose Lane near Matthews Lane, downtown Kingston. The bodies had gunshot wounds to the head.

A jury comprising five women and seven men was selected yesterday to try the case. Three witnesses testified yesterday at the in camera trial.

Attorneys-at-law K. Churchill Neita, Valerie Neita-Robertson and Lloyd McFarlane are representing Phipps. Attorney-at-law George Soutar is representing Williams.

The Crown is being represented by Paula Llewellyn, Senior Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions, Donald Bryan, Acting Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions and Icolin Reid, Crown Counsel. Mr. Justice Horace Marsh is presiding at the trial.
