Cry for mercy from prison
published: Tuesday | March 7, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

IT IS evident to us behind the bars that the Government is the chief leader in creating criminal monsters.

But my question to Jamaica is: Why are you helping the Government to breed crime and violence? How can you decrease crime, when you turn your backs on the root of the crime problem? How can you have a man locked up 10 to 20 years and you don't educate him during his incarceration, or teach him a trade and prepare him to come back as an asset?

The Government can't feed all the inmates locked up but when their families bring food for them the officers turn back the food saying that their superior said they can't allow the inmate to get the food from his family who can afford it.

FUTURE SUCCESS

Inmates deserve to get medical attention. We need to be rehabilitated to be able to contribute to our society; even though we have failed in the past, we can be a success in the future. The prison system is creating a den of deadly monsters. Don't you the citizens of Jamaica care about the future when these monsters you help to create? As long as you are not doing anything to ensure that inmates are properly rehabilitated, you are contributing to your own disaster.

We deserve punishment, but show mercy as you'd love it shown to you. I am an inmate who doesn't want to become the monster that the prison system wants me to.

I am, etc.,
