AUSSIE GRANT

Psychologist and lecturer in the Department of Behavioural Sciences at Northern Caribbean University, Dr. Orlean Brown-Earle, has received close to half a million dollars in grants from the Australian Government, to fund a project aimed at raising awareness about the needs of persons with disabilities.

News of the funding came in early February, following a detailed submission of the project by Dr. Brown-Earle to the high commission's Discretionary Aid Programme (DAP). She received a total of US$6,000, which is expected to cover the cost of the project.

The project, entitled 'Reaching People, Opening Minds', seeks to identify adults and children with disabilities, raise the awareness of rural Jamaicans to the academic and emotional needs of children with learning disabilities and encourage their physical, mental and spiritual development.

Under the project, one-day workshops will be held, provisions made for technical assistance, relevant material distributed and a study done to evaluate effectiveness.
