Excelsior poised to lift schoolgirls hockey title
published: Monday | February 13, 2006

Paul-Andre, WalkerStaff Reporter

EXCELSIOR HIGH School are a step away from taking the Jamaica Hockey Federation/Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Association Under-19 schoolgirls hockey title.

They are the hot favourites going into today's final at the Mona Hockey field.

Their opponents in the 3:30 p.m. fixture will be St. Andrew High, who only ensured a berth in the final on the last day of preliminary competition.

St. Andrew had to stave off a game Wolmer's Girls' unit, not to mention the onslaught of the Convent of Mercy Academy 'Alpha', who will both compete in the third place play-off.

The play-off, which is scheduled to begin at 2 o'clock will pit two evenly matched teams.

In their last outing, Wolmer's clipped Alpha 4-3 in an enthralling encounter that could have gone either way.

Fans will expect the same ding-dong affair this afternoon. In the feature showdown, Sasha-Gale Thomas has been the top marksman for Excelsior but has had help from Patrice Clarke, who also has five goals in the tournament.

St. Andrew have some quality attackers as well. Racene Johnson, joins five other girls on the top of the leader boards with five goals.

Even with that though, St. Andrew are the underdogs after Excelsior proved dominant throughout the season, being the only team that is yet to drop a point.

They made the final days before and have had a lengthy rest period to look at their would-be opponents.
