WESTERN BUREAU:
SEBA UNITED continued to solidify their position in mid-table in the 2005-06 Wray & Nephew NPL Football Competition yesterday when goals by Delroy Ellis (two) and Omar Reid gave them an emphatic 3-1 win over a tactically deficient Reno at the Frome Sports Ground, in Westmoreland.
"For a makeshift team, I thought we played quite well," said Seba United's coach Heron Grey, whose squad is badly depleted by injuries. "At this stage of the competition, every single point is important so I am quite pleased that despite our injury problems we were still good enough to win here today."
The game started with Reno enjoying the better of the action and creating the better opportunities. They should have taken the lead in the fifth minute when Fabian Blake latched onto a neat pass inside the penalty area but instead of shooting, he hesitated, and loss possession to an alert goalkeeper Loxley Reid.
Reno again came close in the 19th minute when Josimar Crook's brilliant turn on the edge of the goal area left the Seba defence in tatters. However, with a clear shot on goal, he too hesitated and then had his shot blocked by a recovering defender.
Mid-way the half, Seba United came to life and created two good chances in rapid succession in the 33rd and 39th minutes respectively. Firstly, Floyd Scott booted high after pouncing on a rebound before the goal and secondly, Wilfred Smith latched onto a pass from Norman Foster but directed his head straight at the goalkeeper.
With time running out in the half, Seba took the lead in the 44th minute with a brilliant strike. Smith dazzled his way past several defenders and pulled back a super cross from the goal-line into the path of his Ellis. His shot rattled the back of the net, making the score 1-0.
On the stroke of half-time, Seba struck again with the help of a bad blunder by goalkeeper Kingsley James. A good low cross by the overlapping Damion Nelson slipped through the hands of the goalkeeper and rolled into the path of Omar Reid, who calmly slotted home, making the score 2-0.
Seba's relentless attack paid further dividends in the 71st minute when the hard-working Ellis score his second goal. He came out of a goal-mouth melee with the ball at his feet and promptly waltzed passed the goalkeeper before slotting into the unprotected goal, making the score 3-0.
With defeat looking a certainty, Reno grabbed a consolation goal in the 78th minute when substitute Ricardo Scott scored.
