Road work approval in St Mary an injustice says Dawkins
published: Monday | February 13, 2006

Lisia Lynch, Gleaner Writer

ST. MARY:

After merrily singing, "There should be 'showers' of blessing!" to the joy of Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) councillors, the monthly meeting of the St. Mary Parish Council, held in the council chambers, was called to order.

In his opening address, Mayor Robert Montague mentioned the issue of the 'tear gas money', which was yet to be disbursed to the council. According to Earl Dawkins, St. Mary's superintendent of road and works, although a list of roads to be repaired was sent in by councillors, only four of the roads were approved.

Responding to Superintendent Dawkins, Deputy Mayor Richard Creary said this was indeed total injustice to all concerned.

The Mayor also noted that time is against them to complete work on the roads, which should be finished before the March 31.

Also discussed at the meeting was the upcoming Cricket World Cup. According to Mayor Montague, there had been discussions and an agreement to make St. Mary an official route from Trelawny to Kingston. He said this would be of benefit to the parish and to businesses in the parish. A committee is being set up to prepare the parish for this venture.

Dr. San San Win, the parishes medical officer, in her address to the Parish Council, said two Cuban doctors had joined the health department services since January.
