Spanish Town crisis: Government must lead
published: Monday | February 13, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

YOUR EDITORIAL today (February 10) on Spanish Town ends with an appeal to good citizens, the business community and the security forces to work for improvement.

That plea would have been stronger had you also emphasised the responsibility of the Government to lead in providing the climate and environment for the orderly development of the area.

We cannot all lead and the citizens and business folk have democratically delegated that power and authority to the Government.

We the people have provided the administration with enormous funding by taxation and the underwriting of billions of dollars of borrowings.

All we can do is to demand that our representatives do what they are elected and paid to do, and without a doubt, we will better undertake this task when civil society gets the deliberate, conscious and continuous backing of the great power of the media.

I am, etc.,

KEN JONES
