What artistes think?
published: Monday | February 13, 2006

TOOTS

'We must take care of our children and the society will be a much better place.'

- Toots

TODAY, THE Gleaner begins a feature on What Artistes Think. The column looks at current societal issues and asks an artiste to give his/her opinion on that issue. It is social awareness from those who are sometimes held responsible, appropriately or not, for highlighting and contributing to the attitude of the society.

The topic up for scrutiny is the Maintenance Act, to which the Governor-General gave his assent on December 6, 2005. Under this Act, spouses are obligated to support each other, parents to support their children and persons to support their parents and grandparents.

This has changed from the previous act, under which only the man was obligated to support his wife and children. Toots Hibbert gives us his opinion on the new law.

"I think it's a good law. I think we must all help each other. We learn this from a young age from home, and spouses are supposed to support each other. We must take care of our children and the society will be a much better place," he said.

"The law should work because we all need each other's help in the society. Families will be much better off as the necessary support will be coming," said Toots.
