Tough action from local selectors
published: Tuesday | January 24, 2006

JAMAICA WILL field a new-look team when they face Guyana in the Carib Beer Series match at Chedwin Park this weekend.

Open batsmen Xavier Marshall and Brenton Marshall and middle order batsman Shawn Findlay have all been dropped because of poor form during Jamaica's away defeats in Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados. In fact, Jamaica are the only team to lose outright in this year's competition.

The selectors have recalled fast bowlers Daren Powell and Dwight Washington, along with middle order batsman Danza Hyatt. Powell was out on a two-match suspension for disciplinary reasons.

Chris Gayle is back in the team after recovering from heart surgery. Donovan Pagon is also back after recovering from knee surgery.

Also included in the 20-man training squad are Marlon Samuels, Hinds, Gareth Breese, Jerome Taylor, Andrew Richardson, Carlton Baugh, Dwight Stewart, Alton Beckford, Odean Brown, Andre Dwyer, Keith Hibbert, David Bernard Jr., Nikita Miller, Jermaine Lawson and Tamar Lambert.

Chairman of selectors Ruddy Williams said they will finalise the 13-man squad by tomorrow.

Meanwhile, third in the six-team standing on 12 points, and with only one game to play, Jamaica must at least gain first innings lead against the Shivnarine Chanderpaul-led Guyana to remain in contention for one of the top four spots and a place in the Carib Challenge Shield semi-finals.

Jamaica, Guyana and the Leeward Islands are all locked on 12 points.
