Police nab cow thieves
published: Tuesday | January 24, 2006

Analee Bernard, Gleaner Writer

BLACK RIVER, St. Elizabeth:

THE ST. Elizabeth police are reporting success in their drive against cattle thefts in the parish. According to the police, two men are in custody following an operation last Thursday night during which the men were caught with a stolen cow.

The Black River police reported that a Nissan Vanette minibus was stopped along Crane Road and a cow, branded with the initials A.M. and A.L., was discovered in the vehicle.

The police said the occupants of the mini-bus, Lennox Hill, 36, of Ricketts Street, Savanna-la-Mar, and Dennis Reid, 53, of Heavy Lane, both in Westmoreland, could not provide satisfactory explanation for their possession of the animal.

Both men were subsequently arrested and charged for unlawful possession of, and receiving stolen property. They are to appear in the Black River Resident Magistrate's Court on January 25.

In recent weeks, there have been numerous complaints from St. Elizabeth cattle farmers who have lost many of their animals to theft.
