THE EDITOR, Sir:
I WRITE to you in response to an article published in The Gleaner dated January 17, under the headline 'The Force of Upliftment'.
The article stated that "Early in 2005, Upliftment Jamaica acquired the former Goodyear Tyre Factory building ... the new name will be Upliftment Jamaica 21st Century Training Centre".
Factories Corporation of Jamaica Limited (FCJ) wishes to set the record straight as follows:
The old Goodyear Tyre Factory located in Springfield, St. Thomas is currently owned by FCJ and there are no negotiations in progress for the re-naming of the property or transfer of same to any private organisation.
FCJ is nevertheless anxious to have the old Goodyear Tyre Factory occupied and is currently considering an expression of interest for lease of a section of the complex by Upliftment Jamaica Limited.
As the work of Upliftment Jamaica Limited benefits many persons, particularly the residents of St. Thomas, FCJ looks forward to the satisfactory conclusion of the lease negotiations with Upliftment Jamaica.
I am, etc.,
MARSHA DAVIDSON
Deputy general manager
Factories Corporation of Jamaica Ltd.
