A wager for the truth

THE EDITOR, Sir:
A FEW weeks ago, I was part of a heated argument in which I was trying to convince a number of persons that the results of the Supreme Ventures Lottery Game were determined entirely by chance and could not possibly be fixed or influenced beforehand by the company.
I could not persuade the other side, who then proceeded to bet me that in the weeks of the Supreme Venture public offer, the jackpot would exceed $75 million in order to give greater publicity to the offering.
I pointed out that even if this jackpot figure was indeed ex-ceeded, that in itself would in no way prove that the game was rigged.
However, I did take the bet, agreeing that, if I lost, I would (a) stand the cost of drinks for a certain period (b) write this letter to the press. I am, therefore, honouring my wager.
I am, etc.,
