Bernard Lodge on temporary lockdown
published: Tuesday | January 24, 2006

THE SUGAR Company of Jamaica (SCJ) has temporarily shut down operations at the Bernard Lodge Sugar Factory in St. Catherine, with immediate effect.

In a release yesterday, the SCJ said it would be suspending factory operations for the next three weeks as a result of a series of unusual and suspicious incidents, which have disrupted its functions.

The SCJ said the latest incident resulted in damage to a turbine gearbox at the factory, which is now being investigated by external experts.

According to the SCJ, the investigations will be completed within one week and will result in swift and decisive action.

The SCJ is also reporting that during the three weeks that the factory will be closed it will complete repairs to the damaged equipment to restore the facility to full capacity.
