Auditor-General urged to probe National Security funds misuse claim
published: Tuesday | January 24, 2006

PEOPLE'S NATIONAL Party leadership contender, Dr. Peter Phillips, wants the Auditor-General to launch an immediate investigation into the expenditure of funds by the National Security Ministry for which he has portfolio responsibility.

Dr. Phillips' request follows Sunday's claims by members of the campaign team of fellow leadership contender, Portia Simpson Miller, that there were concerns regarding the spending of funds from the ministry's community security initiative and for the repairs, refurbishing and painting of police stations. Team Portia had also requested that the party hierarchy investigate the matter.

But during a meeting with delegates in Linstead, St. Catherine, last night, Dr. Phillips said this would not be enough.

"I have worked too long and too hard to establish total transparency and integrity in my ministry to have people question it in a dubious cause," he said.
