Fitzgerald gets first win at Rivoli
published: Saturday | January 21, 2006

Rasbert Turner, Gleaner Writer

SPANISH TOWN:

CALVERT FITZGERALD had every reason to be happy after scoring his first win with new team Rivoli United, when the Spanish Town team eased past Negril Football Club 3-0 at the Spanish Town Prison Oval in their Red Stripe KO clash on Wednesday.

"We played good in patches and I am thankful for the win as it is my first as coach of Rivioli," Fiztgerald noted.

"We should have dominated the match more and I hope on our next outing we will do much better as the team will be strengthened," the coach who recently parted company with Waterhouse added.

The goals came from the boots of Devon Hodges (13th minute), Derrick Planter (33rd) and Patrick Beech (78th).

STAGE FRIGHT

As for Negril's coach Junior Francis, his players got stage fright.

"We showed too much respect to the Rivoli team and that's why they dominated the match. You must understand that it is the first some of these players are playing against a premier league team. It is a learning experience and we will be coming back better next time," he warned of the January 29 return fixture.

The match started with both teams playing well until Hodges outran his marker and let forth a vicious left-footer that gave the Negril custodian no chance, making it 1-0.

Both teams continued to play well, but it was Rivioli who scored again after Beech received a pass and kicked it back into the path of Planter to net the other goal of the half.
