Sarwan's ton gives Guyana solid start
published: Saturday | January 21, 2006

Sarwan

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC):

WEST INDIES vice-captain Ramnaresh Sarwan lashed an unbeaten century, to guide Guyana to a solid position against Trinidad & Tobago at the close on the opening day of their Carib Beer Series match at Guaracara Park yesterday.

The right-handed Sarwan helped himself to 113 not out as Guyana closed the day on 257 for four. Travis Dowlin was the other not out batsman at the end, with 33.

Sarwan and Dowlin have so far featured in an unbroken fifth wicket partnership of 89 in 105 minutes.

With moderate scores against the Leewards last week, Sarwan put his lean from behind him to strike 15 fours from 195 balls, in 287 minutes.

There was a wicket apiece for Richard Kelly (1-19), Dwayne Bravo (1-45), Dave Mohammed (1-45) and Sanjiv Gooljar (1-73).

Earlier, T&T captain Daren Ganga won the toss and inserted Guyana, who left out Imran Jafferally and Reon Griffith from the final XI.

The move to put the opposition in paid dividends early in the game when the talented Richard Kelly had opening batsman Krishna Arjune trapped in front for one with the score on eight.

Narsingh Deonarine joined Sewnarine Chattergoon and together steered Guyana to 57 before Deonarine fell just before the interval, caught by Sanjiv Gooljar at mid-on, off left-arm spinner Dave Mohammed for 15.

At the interval, Guyana had reached 62 for two with Chattergoon on 43 and Sarwan, one.

On the resumption, Chattergoon was caught by Sherwin Ganga at first slip off the bowling of Dwayne Bravo without adding, with the score on 65, after batting for 128 minutes and 91 balls, striking seven boundaries.

RAIN, NO PLAY

CASTRIES, St Lucia, CMC

A soggy outfield caused by persistent rain has resulted in the abandonment of the opening day of the Carib Beer Series match between the Windward Islands and the Leeward Islands at Mindoo Phillip Park yesterday.

Wet spots have also developed around the playing area but the playing surface has remained in tact.

Officials say they are hopeful of play on the second day today.
