JAMAICA SHOULD have a new Governor-General by February 15, Information Minister Burchell Whiteman has confirmed.
On that date, according to Mr. Whiteman, it is expected that outgoing Governor-General, Sir Howard Cooke, will demit office, making way for his successor.
Mr. Whiteman, speaking with The Gleaner, said the process of finding a replacement for Sir Howard was well advanced. Accordingly, he said Prime Minister P.J. Patterson should be in a position to announce the new appointment by next week.
Contrary to earlier expectations, Mr. Whiteman said there would not be a transition period during which someone else would act in the position of Governor-General, pending the appointment of the substantive holder of the office.
"In this particular case the Prime Minister has gone through the process and by next week should be able to indicate to the country, who the successor is," he said.
