Pilferers in the postal service
published: Saturday | January 21, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

FROM TIME to time I listen to persons complaining that their relatives are delinquent in their support, whether children, fathers, mothers, whoever the relation may be, abroad.

These persons are to be made aware that their relatives are not so much delinquent but that they are not receiving the mail from their relatives abroad.

In May of 2005 my sister sent a card for Mother's Day. She informed us as to when she had mailed this card so there could be an anticipated time of receipt.

The card actually arrived in our letterbox in November 2005. The card and envelope were in pieces, totally torn to pieces, with the contents of the envelope exposed and falling out.

I decided to investigate and have been speaking with persons about their experiences with the post offices and mail, and I have learnt a number of negative things about the system.

I have also learnt from persons who work at post offices that individuals who sort have been searching the mail and removing their contents, especially if they are of monetary value.

These pilferers have allowed themselves to be locked up in the office overnight so that they can rummage through people's mail and help themselves to grandma's support money.

This behaviour is totally reprehensible and this should be dealt with.

I am, etc.,

A. FRANCIS
