published: Sunday | January 8, 2006

Fifteen-year-old Giovanni McKenzie, of Elletson Road in east Kingston, was shot to death by gunmen while he slept at his home early yesterday morning.

Yesterday afternoon, 81-year-old David Miller, the teenager's grandfather, sat at his gate dejectedly as he tried to come to terms with the loss of his grandson.

Giovanni's father, Ricardo McKenzie, was also grief stricken over what he described as the senseless killing of his child.

"Him no mix up inna none a di vibes whey a gwaan 'bout yah," he declared, his eyes clouded with fatigue. "'Him don't even go a road; he only go to the gate and spend a few minutes and come back inside."

He described how he discovered his son's lifeless body, hours after he had watched him ironing his uniform in preparation to go back to school tomorrow after the Christmas break. Giovanni attends Calabar High School.

"When mi hear di shots dem, mi neva know say a inna di house them a fire, but mi get up go look and mi notice say his door was open. I looked and saw him in the bed so I thought he was still sleeping. I tried to close the door and I realised that it had been kicked in. I turned on the light and that was when I realised that he had been shot," he explained shaking his head.
