'True justice', that's what really counts
published: Sunday | January 8, 2006

THE EDITOR, Sir:

A JUDGE that fails to do a good job is no better than the street sweeper that does a bad job. No matter what position one may hold in this wicked, lying world, high or low, powerful or not, we are merely human beings and what really counts is true justice towards our fellowman, whether he may be a pauper, rich, educated, black, white, yellow or pink.

History shows that those who defend the rights of the poor are always hated by the state and its crooked laws and because of prejudice and classism, Jesus Christ was murdered by the state, as were George William Gordon, Paul Bogle, Sam Sharpe and many more.

My country, Jamaica, is a class society where God's human beings are classified and graded as cattle. If you are poor, you are categorised as lower class; if one has little education, but is not rich, you are middle class; if rich, you are upper class. And as such, our justice system is graded and given according to class as mentioned above.

As one prominent journalist said in a newspaper: "It seems contradictory for me to say this but were I a member of the jury even knowing what I believe to be the truth, I would have voted for acquittal simply because I would be comparing the sum total of Adams with what I believe to be the sum total of the friends of Chen Chen."

Sir, men in high places in society pampered and clothed in hypocrisy will always rant and rage when their conscience cries out within. Jamaica, please remember Agana Barrett, Michael Gayle and others.

I am, etc.,

ROBERT SOLOMON HENRY

Lot 11 North Monticello Crescent, Spanish Town P.O.
