St Mary murders almost double in 2005
published: Thursday | January 5, 2006

Lisia Lynch, Gleaner Writer

ST. MARY:

THE NUMBER of murders committed in St. Mary in 2005 almost doubled with a total of 29 murders compared to 16 murders in the previous year.

This trend has become so overwhelming that residents, with a macabre sense of humour, now dub the parish, 'machete country'.

WEAPONS

According to the police, unlike many other parishes, where guns are the main weapons used to commit vicious crime, most crimes in St. Mary are committed by either the machete or knife.

Domestic violence has been fingerpointed as the main cause of murders, with the others arising from disputes between acquaintances.

KILLANCHOLY KILLING

St. Mary was also the focal point of one of the most horrific murder stories of the year, that of the murders of the three children of Killancholy by a family member.

According to recent media reports, the incident has scarred that community forever.
