THE EDITOR, Sir:
JAMAICA WILL come to a fork in the road during 2006. A new prime minister will take over the reins of government and there is the possibility of a general election. The person chosen to lead Jamaica for the next period of government will need to have a proper blueprint to lead the country out of the debacle of the past decades. We need a leader who can help to motivate the country to have reverence for God. Our nation was founded with God as the eternal father; we need to strengthen that bond not weaken it. Is there someone in this crop of potential leaders who has the humility of spirit but the strength of character to lead the nation?
I am tired of the narrow-mindedness in Jamaica's party politics. If the USA and other countries can have elections with little or no violence, we can do the same. It is time we stop exposing our dirty laundry for the world to see. The strange thing about our laundry is the mere fact that not all the stains are from hard work, but some are from the blood of others. We can dream of having full employment with the right fiscal and monetary policies and still be in a quagmire. Jamaica needs someone who can reconcile the fractions - unity is strength; a country is as strong as its weakest family.
We have this great fascination with baby father, baby mother and the man with 'nuff gal' scenario. What is really needed are wholesome families. Look at the stable societies around the world and you will find great value placed on family relationships. The family is God's first institution that He placed on earth. We need to strengthen it through the marriage bond, not loosen it with cheap sex. The church is the institution to lead the way in moral values. The history of mankind is littered with the debris of societies that have fallen into moral decay. The country must focus on God as the supreme leader. Our political and church leaders must have the willingness and character to lead the nation this way. The choice is, humble ourselves before God and prosper, or go the way of the flesh and decay. I pray that those who come after us can blend our colloquial tongue to look back and say, "They have allowed Jah to mek yah."
I am, etc.,
