Sligoville residents irate over cop vehicle shortage
published: Tuesday | December 27, 2005

Rasbert Turner, Gleaner Writer

MORE THAN 10,000 St. Catherine residents served by the Sligoville police have been disenfranchised as the lone vehicle assigned to the station has been out of operation for the past nine weeks.

Several residents who spoke to The Gleaner claimed that they have had a very difficult time as whenever reports are made, it takes a very long time for a vehicle to arrive from Spanish Town. They added that on some occasions, police personnel at the station have had to resort to using their private motor vehicles to carry out police functions such as patrols and the arrest of persons.

When a check was made at the station, sub officer in charge, Corporal Calford Bryan, said that the vehicle is currently at the garage and it is being worked on.

"We hope that it will be fixed soon as the area is centrally located, especially when the Bog Walk Gorge is impassable," he said.

Checks by this correspondent also revealed that the station covers more than 20 police districts, extending to Rock Hall, Pleasant Hill and even St. Jago Heights.

"Something must be done about the situation, especially since we are in the middle of the festive season and a New Year is approaching," one resident said.
