Government of Jamaica schedules meeting to resolve Nurses Association of Jamaica dispute
published: Tuesday | December 27, 2005

THE MINISTRY of Health, in a bid to avert a face-off with the Nurses Association of Jamaica (NAJ), has scheduled an early meeting in January to resolve the dispute over the reclassification and transfer of some nurses.

The NAJ has been upset that the Ministry of Finance has begun the reclassification of some of its nurses without prior notification.

The NAJ has also taken issue with the Ministry of Health, which has begun transferring nurses to the Regional Health Authorities. According to the NAJ, "The ministry has not sent the terms and conditions of each nurse's employment to them but has requested that they indicate by the end of January whether they will be requesting transfer to the Regional Health Authority."

The nurses' association instead wants the Ministry of Health and the Services Commission to immediately implement a general reclassification of all nursing levels within the group of nurses.

However, the ministry said the NAJ's latest concern will be high on the agenda of the scheduled meeting.
