THE BOARD of the Jamaica Social Investment Fund (JSIF) recently approved $48.7 million to fund six projects in St. Catherine, St. Mary, St. Andrew and Trelawny.
In St. Andrew, the projects include the Boucher Park sanitation system which has been allocated $20.9 million.
The money will be used to construct sanitary units and a waste disposal system.
Approval was given for $445,000 to be used for the implementation of the Handz Down Training Centre. The centre, which specialises in cosmetology provides skills training for 35 persons from nine inner-city communities in the downtown Kingston area. They include Rae Town, Southside, Spoilers, Rose Gardens and Allman Town.
BASIC SCHOOL CONSTRUCTION
Construction of the Dunrobin Basic School was also approved for $6 million.
Additionally, $3.56 million was approved for the Church Pen domestic water supply in St. Catherine. The project involves the upgrading and expansion of the water supply system by the replacement and or installation of new pipelines.
NEW SCHOOL BUILDING
In St. Mary, $10.4 million was approved for the construction of the Maiden Hall Basic School. The allocation will be utilised to construct a new school building comprising two classrooms, a principal's office, sanitary and kitchen/canteen facilities. Furniture and equipment will also be provided.
In Trelawny, $7.2 million was allocated for the rehabilitation and sanitation upgrading of the Alps Primary and Infant School. The money will be used to renovate the existing school building, the installation of a perimeter fence, the erection of a retaining wall and the construction of a new sanitation block.
The JSIF, since it began operations in 1996, has approved 830 projects at a cost of nearly $4 billion.
