Deal with the abortion laws
published: Sunday | December 25, 2005

BUT APART from the ills of the educational system, crime and corruption, some youths also want politicians to put more effort into adjusting abortion laws.

Annife Campbell says the issue is a serious one that needs to be addressed immediately.

Abortion is most common among young women in the age range of 14-25 medical officials say and is the fifth leading cause of maternal death among teenage mothers. Some 30 per cent of women and 16 per cent of adolescents have had at least one abortion.

Abortion is illegal in Jamaica and there have been increased attempts to review existing legislation against the action. In September, the Ministry of Health formed a committee to review the legislation and submit recommendations to Parliament. The recommendations are to be submitted in January.
