Miss Iceland, Unnur Birna Vilhjalmsdottir, reacts after being crowned Miss World 2005 in Sanya on the Chinese island of Hainan, yesterday.

After a dazzling night of beaming her beauty across the globe, and matching wits with 101other beauties, Jamaica's Terri-Karelle Griffith was placed among the final 15 in the keenly contested and prestigious Miss World Beauty Pageant held in the southern China beach resort of Sanya.

Miss Iceland took the crown, while Miss Mexico, Dafne Molina Lona, was the first runner-up, and Miss Puerto Rico, Ingrid Marie Rivera Santos, was second runner-up. Miss Puerto Rico, Ingrid Marie Rivera Santos won the regional title 'Miss Caribbean'.

The 23-year-old Griffiths, a student of veterinary medicine told the panel of judges that her single greatest wish is "to eliminate poverty which seems to be the root of all problems such as illiteracy, crime and violence."

An entertainment coordinator at a north coast resort, Terri-Karelle, a Kingstonian, spends her spare time working at an animal shelter. Her hobbies include reading, listening to music, socialising, swimming, tennis, and she enjoys modern and creative dance.
