THE WORLD'S fastest man, Asafa Powell, has signed a 12-month deal with Cable & Wireless Jamaica (C&WJ).

Under the agreement, Cable & Wireless will be the exclusive telecommunications sponsor of Powell, the world 100m record holder with his 9.77 second clocking in Athens earlier this year.

He will appear at C&WJ events and in advertisements endorsing the company's products and services with the high speed Internet his main target.

The contract was signed by Powell and his MVP Track Club through its president, Bruce James, at C&WJ's corporate offices on Carlton Crescent yesterday. The University of Technology-based MVP Club will also benefit through products, services and cash.

Apart from saying he hopes that C&WJ will continue to link with the fastest man, Powell expressed satisfaction at the deal.

"It's good to know that a Jamaican company can come and show its appreciation for what I am doing for the country ... I just want to say thanks and I hope this goes on for a while," Powell said.

C&WJ president and CEO Rodney Davis explained the signing. "We intend to play a significant role in helping him to stay focused by providing all the support we can," Davis said.
