Gleaner helps the YMCA
published: Saturday | November 19, 2005

YMCA GENERAl Secretary, Sarah Newland-Martin, is reporting that 30 people, some as young as 15, have volunteered after reading a Volunteer Today article on the 'Y' published in July. Then, said Mrs. Newland-Martin, the workload and shortage of volunteers was leaving her exhausted.

"I am especially happy because of their young age and considering the negative image we attach to our youth. They want to settle down and are keen to make a difference," she said.

But, she acknowledged a growing number of boys being taken into the Y had behavioural problems. "These young volunteers are especially important because for these boys they are looking for a positive role model to emulate. They see these volunteers as people who can help them through the programmes we have here."

The Y she added is still looking for volunteers to get involved in its adult learning (literacy) programme.

The YMCA can be contacted by telephone: 926-8081/ 754-9034 or e-mail: kymca@cwjamaica.com.
