St George's College honours 42 students
published: Friday | November 11, 2005

Petrina Francis, Education Reporter

FORTY-TWO STUDENTS at St. George's College in Kingston were honoured last week for successfully making the school's 'honour roll'.

This was a dramatic increase from last year when only 11 students made the honour roll. To make the honour roll students are required to score 80 per cent or more in their internal examinations.

Speaking during the school's annual prize giving ceremony last Friday, principal Dr. Fred Kennedy said "occasions like these are important because we take time out to honour those who have made significant achievements."

He congratulated the parents who were at the ceremony, and said without proper parenting children would not succeed.

NUMBER OF PASSES INCREASED

Based on students' performance in the 2003 Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations, St. George's College was rated 'F' in Dr. Dennis Minott's school ranking. But Dr. Kennedy said there was a 20 per cent increase in the number of students who passed the CSEC examinations this year.

Guest speaker Don Wehby, chief financial officer at GraceKennedy, addressed the students on the topic of 'excellence' and gave them examples of 'Georgians' who have excelled in their fields of study.

He cited hotelier John Issa, whom he described as one of the best hotel operators in the world, and Ray Chang who lives in Canada and is competing with the biggest banks in the world.

"If you want to excel in your respective field, you have to further your studies, love what you are doing and have a passion for what you are doing," he told the honourees.

Students were also honoured for their involvement in extra curricular activities.
